Reviews for 'Who's fooling who?'

Folk Roots (Britain) -1996

From his days with the colourfully named Flex and the Fastweather, Paul Tiernan's work has always steered in a manner typified as "daring". A musical tightrope walker, he has turned the other cheek to convention and come up smiling. "Who's fooling who?" captures him in both live and studio settings and his earnest and forthright talent rings through in a strident and stirring manner.

"Incident at the river's edge" is pulsating while "If the glass breaks" is one of the best unrequited love songs to grace these ears in yonks. "the Darkness" makes a return from the Flex era shining like the proverbial new pin and the gorgeous title track is richly loaded, both musically and lyrically. Always taking the less travelled route, Paul Tiernan has arrived at a compelling and delightfully off centre style of articulation and delivery. "Who's fooling who?" gets his wayward genius on CD......

New Folk Sounds (Netherlands) -1996

Men bereikt hiermee een bepalende rol speelt.

BIG ISSUES …..1996

If you can’t get a record deal the best thing is to release a record under your own steam. Paul Tiernan has done just that and this album makes you wonder why he had to. It is the best Irish album released so far this year. The super bottle neck guitar at the start of "Incident at the river’s edge" leads into a song that a good publisher would kill to get his hands on. "Rachel’s hands" is a beautiful plaintive song, and the musical backing of cello, violin and viola make the early part of this album a very , very classy piece of work……………

DUBLIN EVENT GUIDE…..1996

An unexpectedly gorgeous "singer/songwriter" debut album from Paul Tiernan. A near original concoction of instruments on back up—cello, accordion and fiddle , reminiscent of , if anyone, Elvis Costello. Percussion is kept to a minimum and traddie instruments with a foreign feel all combine to make this an interesting, original and very listenable album.

HOT PRESS……1996

……an album that’s refreshingly discordant, full of unexpected chord changes and inventive couplings of strings and keys that’s test the creative powers of the most inspired writers…. "Jack, the first of the live tracks, is christened with a blissfully menacing intro……..long the master of the poignant love song…..one of the wisest and freshest storybooks to emerge from the local scene……
